Emory reinforces commitment to accessibility with comprehensive policy for individuals with disabilities

Emory recently established a university-wide policy that outlines the institution’s broad responsibilities, procedures and resources related to disability access and accommodations.

Policy 1.11, which took effect in Sept. 2025, formalizes Emory’s ongoing compliance with federal disability laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and applies to students, employees, applicants and campus visitors. The policy provides the framework for ensuring equal access and nondiscrimination for individuals with disabilities across all university programs, services and employment practices, and sets community expectations for providing reasonable accommodations.

“While Emory has always adhered to federal disability laws, this policy provides clarity around how the university ensures equal access and how accommodations are requested,” says Rashad Morgan, director and ADA compliance officer in the Department of Accessibility Services.

The policy reflects Emory’s obligation to provide reasonable accommodations that allow qualified individuals with disabilities to participate fully in university life. Emory’s Department of Accessibility Services oversees this work by partnering with community members to coordinate reasonable accommodations, provide guidance and support meaningful participation across the university. This approach reflects Emory’s commitment to accessibility and its belief that access and belonging are essential to excellence in teaching, research and service, Morgan notes.

The policy also includes protections against retaliation. Emory prohibits retaliation against individuals who request accommodations in good faith, report disability‑based discrimination or harassment or participate in a review or investigation.
