Department of Accessibility Services realigned to enhance student support, simplify access to resources

In a move aimed at enhancing support for students, Emory’s Department of Accessibility Services recently revamped its operating and staffing structure to provide additional accommodations specialists.

Through this staff realignment, the department doubled the number of student-facing accommodations specialists to four. Along with an assistant director, the specialists will meet with students during their initial registration and remain assigned to them throughout their enrollment at Emory.

This new protocol is a departure from the previous model where a staff member would meet with a student and then transfer them to a student access coordinator. The new, personalized approach ensures that the more than 1,600 students registered with the office receive consistent and tailored support throughout their academic career.

“The implementation of this new structure will have a profound impact on the overall culture and climate surrounding accessibility at Emory,” says Rashad Morgan, director and ADA compliance officer. “By fostering closer relationships between students and their designated support personnel, we hope to cultivate an environment that is more inclusive and accommodating for all individuals.”

The department made concerted efforts to ensure a smooth transition by keeping most students matched with their existing contact within the office. Morgan believes the new system, launched this spring, will better assist students in navigating their academic journey.

In addition to the staffing realignment, the department — currently located on the Clairmont campus — plans to move its offices to Emory’s main campus this year. A centrally located office will allow students to more easily access support and connect with their accommodations specialist.

“We are dedicated to ensuring equitable access to education for all students,” says Maurice Middleton, associate vice provost for institutional equity and compliance. “When students feel supported, they can truly flourish, so it’s imperative we foster an inclusive campus community where all individuals are empowered to reach their full potential.”
