Maurice L. Middleton has been selected to become the associate vice provost for institutional equity and compliance, effective May 16. This move comes as a result of the realignment of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) into two distinct units, which was announced by Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Ravi V. Bellamkonda in February 2022.

Middleton leads the newly named Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (OIEC), including the Department of Accessibility Services, the Department of Title IX, and the Department of Equity and Inclusion. These departments previously resided under the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI), led by Vice Provost Carol Henderson. Under the reorganization and in alignment with national best practices, two offices were formed, protecting the neutrality and objectivity necessary for the compliance work that Middleton oversees and supporting a pathway for ODEI’s advocacy work.

“The OIEC remains committed to promoting a fair and accessible campus environment for the Emory University community,” says Middleton. “Fairness, in its simplest terms, means being marked by impartiality, neutrality, and honesty, and this is something that we will foster within our community each day. I am thankful to the Emory community at large, and I am looking forward to great things to come.”
