Emory University’s Office of Global Strategy and Initiatives has unveiled its new name: Emory Global Engagement.

The strategic rebranding aims to articulate and promote the university’s commitment to three areas: international partnerships, excellence in the services and operations that support a globally engaged university, and fostering a globally interconnected educational and research environments for students and faculty in Atlanta and abroad.

“Global Engagement encompasses multiple interconnected units and functions of global operations and services,” says Jane Gatewood, who joined Emory in early January 2025 as vice provost for global engagement. “Our new name reflects our collaborative commitment to offering a comprehensive hub for guidance, strategy and support for faculty, staff and students engaged internationally.”

Emory Global Engagement comprises International Student and Scholar Services, the Halle Institute for Global Research, Global Services, Global Safety and Security and Atlanta Global Partnerships.

The office’s new identity reflects the team’s shared dedication to serving the entire Emory community through:

  • Enhanced support for international students and scholars across all schools and programs, working with campus partners to develop a deeper understanding of their experiences and needs throughout the student and scholar life cycle.
  • Strengthened resources for outbound travelers, including increased collaboration with schools to support students participating in Emory experiences abroad.
  • Expanded assistance for international research, in collaboration with campus partners.
  • Alignment with the Emory 2O36 plan and vision to ensure that Emory remains a locus for global research, knowledge creation, dissemination and discovery.
  • Advancement of cross-campus priorities for international education, global learning, research and academic collaboration.

Global work and international community are central to Emory’s research and academic mission.

As Gatewood notes, Emory Global Engagement positions the university to deepen and expand its connections and collaborations around the world, while building awareness of Emory’s leadership and innovation in global research and education.

“Emory Global Engagement supports a wide range of global research and activities occurring in other countries, bi- and multi-lateral academic and research collaborations and exchanges, support services for international students and scholars, safety and security for travelers abroad, as well as promotion of cross-cultural understanding,” she says. “I’m honored and excited to spearhead efforts to ensure that these initiatives align with Emory’s core values and priorities, thereby contributing to the realization of Emory’s strategic vision globally.”

Global Engagement strives to reach the entire Emory community through its activities and programming, encouraging students, faculty and staff to participate in initiatives such as the recently relaunched annual celebration of International Education Week; events like the upcoming Turkish Lecture on March 4, which will feature professor Ali Çarkoğlu speaking; and a variety of intercultural communication and leadership training workshops.

The office’s rebranding process is ongoing and will include a new mission statement; a redesigned website with easily accessible resources for faculty, staff and students; and a refreshed social media presence, among other items.
