This fall, Emory’s International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office welcomed students from around the world at orientations, resource fairs and the International Student Welcome Reception.

Emory’s incoming classes boast a wide range of students from all corners of the country and globe. To make that transition easier, the ISSS office offers a variety of orientation and welcome activities to help students settle into their new lives in Atlanta.

The annual signature fall event for ISSS is the International Student Welcome Reception, which is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. This reception, held in the Emory Student Center, was attended by members of the new international student class and various campus partners. Attendees participated in networking and fun activities while enjoying delicious international cuisines.

“The International Student Welcome Reception was so much fun, and I was happy to meet students from so many different countries,” says Debbie Brummer, an exchange student at Candler School of Theology. “The atmosphere was super warm and welcoming, which made me feel right at home. I'm glad that ISSS organizes such wonderful events."

During orientation sessions offered to smaller groups based on students’ academic programs or schools, new F-1 and J-1 international students received a wide range of information on such topics as Emory’s support resources, U.S. immigration regulations and navigating life in the United States.

ISSS also continued its tradition of facilitating Social Security cards for students. International students are not automatically assigned a Social Security number by the U.S. government; therefore, a large portion of Emory’s international population must apply for an SSN upon their arrival to the U.S. if they will work on campus or apply for a driver’s license. By hosting two on-campus Social Security appointment days, ISSS helped students apply for Social Security numbers with a representative from the U.S. Social Security Administration.

ISSS staff connected with new students and student leaders at resource fairs and expos across the university, including the Candler Opportunities Fair, the Laney Graduate School Picnic, the Emory College of Arts and Sciences Expo and many more.
