The Center for AI Learning opened its doors for a lively ribbon-cutting and open house event on September 19, welcoming more than 100 students, faculty, staff and community partners to Suite 217 in the Woodruff Library.

The center, a key part of Emory’s AI.Humanity initiative, will offer a variety of learning programs, networking events and support services to facilitate collaborative research, promote experiential learning and nurture community leadership in AI.

Joe Sutherland, the center’s director, and Ravi Bellamkonda, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, gave remarks followed by the ribbon cutting.

On hand for the ribbon cutting were:

  • Joe Sutherland, director of the Center for AI Learning

  • Ravi Bellamkonda, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs

  • Lance Waller, co-leader of the Center for AI Learning and professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics in the Rollins School of Public Health

  • Cliff Carrubba, co-leader of the Center for AI Learning and chair of the Department of Quantitative Theory and Methods in Emory College of Arts and Sciences

  • Paul Welty, vice provost for academic innovation

  • Yana Bromberg, principal program fellow in the Center for AI Learning and professor in the Departments of Biology and Computer Science in Emory College of Arts and Sciences

  • Grant Wainscott, vice president, Ecosystem Expansion, Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce

  • Sasha Smith, technology advisor to Mayor Andre Dickens, Office of Technology, City of Atlanta

Attendees enjoyed refreshments, tours of the space, student presentations and great conversation.

“It was fantastic to see such a diverse group of people here at the Center. One of our roles is to foster collaboration between AI scholars. I know many of the discussions that began at our event will blossom into partnerships and propel new AI innovations,” said Sutherland. “I hope every member of the Emory community will try to drop by the Center sometime this semester to explore our offerings and get engaged.”

The Center for AI Learning is open Monday – Thursday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. To learn more and get involved, visit the Center’s website.
