Anant Mandawat, MD, has joined Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University and Emory University Division of Cardiology as the new director of the cardio-oncology program. The joint effort, initiated in 2011, is one of a few programs in the United States dedicated to addressing the cardiovascular consequences of cancer and of cancer therapy and caring for the heart health of cancer survivors.
In this role, Mandawat will focus on improving outcomes for cancer patients by working with his colleagues to offer expert advice and guidance to patients who are either undergoing or have completed cancer treatment or are being followed in the Winship Survivorship Program to prevent, monitor, and manage cardiovascular effects and complications.
Mandawat, an assistant professor in both the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology and the Department of Medicine, completed his fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. A graduate of the Yale University School of Medicine, he completed his internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. His clinical interests include long-term cardiac risk assessment and follow-up care in cancer survivors.
“Dr. Mandawat will provide valuable expertise and depth to Winship’s multidisciplinary team of experts as we expand our cardio-oncology program,” says Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD, Winship’s executive director. “The clinical and research partnership between Winship and Emory’s Division of Cardiology will ultimately improve lives throughout the state of Georgia and beyond.”
“The cardio-oncology and advanced cardiac imaging expertise that Dr. Mandawat brings to the program will be a great benefit to our patients and enhance our continued efforts to provide collaborative evaluation and care of cancer patients by Emory cardiologists and Winship oncologists,” says W. Robert Taylor, MD, PhD, director of the Division of Cardiology.
