Winship Win the Fight 5K: Still time to run, donate and volunteer

The 6th annual Winship Win the Fight 5K picks up steam as the day of the race, Saturday, Oct. 1, nears. Teams and individuals have pledged over $670,000 so far.

More than 3,000 walkers and runners are expected to participate. Funds raised are used for cancer research at Emory. The tax-deductible donations can be directed to benefit specific cancer research projects based on personal interest in one of 18 different areas.

John Schuerholz, vice chairman of the Atlanta Braves, will serve as grand marshal of the event.

"It means a lot to me as a cancer survivor that the money raised at this event will stay right here in our community to benefit cancer research at Winship," Schuerholz says.

Online registration for the 5K Walk/Run closes on Thursday, Sept. 29, at 8 a.m. In-person registration is Friday, Sept. 30, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Dobbs University Center terrace. This is also the last chance to get a timing chip. The registration fee is $40; a timing chip is $45. Payment is cash or checks only; no credit cards.

Also, at the in-person registration, those who have already registered can pick up their bib and T-shirt packet and timing chip early instead of the day of the race when pick-up opens at 7 a.m.

The Winship Win the Fight 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at McDonough Field, winding through the Druid Hills neighborhood and returning to the field. It is a Peachtree Road Race qualifier event.

Participants can also register the day of the event but the cost will be $50. No timing chips will be available. Again, cash and checks are the only payment methods accepted. Also, T-shirts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis after other registrants have claimed their shirts at the end of the race.

The race may be canceled or modified in the event of extreme weather for the safety of the runners, walkers and the race volunteers. However, the registration fee is nonrefundable even if the race is modified or cancelled.

"Volunteer Warriors" needed

If you want to support the race but not run or walk, "Volunteer Warriors" are needed both before and during the event.

On Friday, Sept. 30, volunteers are needed to help with distributing participant packets and t-shirts. At the race on Saturday, volunteers are needed to serve as greeters and route monitors, and to distribute food and water. For more information or to sign up for a shift, please email DaVida Lee-Williams at DLeewil@emory.edu.

Those who cannot attend events but want to support the Winship Win the Fight 5K can also participate virtually as a "Sleep-in Warrior" to donate and raise funds.
