Jacqueline Cutts, a student at Emory's Rollins School of Public Health, found a simple, but clever solution for unsafe birthing problems in Uganda. In rural health centers, women who come at night to delivery babies are often left in the dark, as many centers lack electricity and therefore have no light. In emergencies births may be done by candlelight or by the glow of a mobile phone. Light the Night is a project installing "solar suitcases" by WE CARE Solar in rural health facilities. These suitcases, which charge during the daytime hours, are used to provide lighting, charge devices like mobile phones, and power medical devices like head lamps for focused light.
