Suggest the next topic for the 2013 University Course

The Center for Faculty Development and Excellence (CFDE) has issued an invitation for faculty to suggest for topics for the next University Course in spring semester 2013.

The University Course, which unites faculty and students from varied disciplines to examine multiple facets of a single topic, has been offered twice in the past.

The first, "Methland," was held in 2011 focusing on Nick Reding's book about the meth epidemic in the United States and substance abuse and drug addiction. The most recent, held this past spring semester, was "Viral Cultures: HIV/AIDS in Global, Academic, and Cultural Contexts."

The CFDE supports the curricular set-up of the University Course, whose purpose is to focus Emory's many intellectual perspectives and resources on studying major topics. The goal is to create a sense of common purpose across the University's diverse communities.

Any and all proposed topics will be considered but they need to be broad enough to span a variety of schools and disciplines, according to Donna Troka, CFDE associate director.

To suggest a topic, email a 1-2 page summary to dtroka@emory.edu with the following:

• Topic and justification for its relevance as a University Course;

• A rough sketch of aspects and perspectives to be covered in the class;

• Names and school/departmental affiliations of faculty interested in participating as guest lecturers;

• Name, rank, department and contact information.

Applications to teach a University Course in spring 2013 are due June 29.
