Updates on incident near Oxford College campus

Message from Interim President Sears

Oct. 30, 2025

This week we found hateful racist symbols near our Oxford campus. These symbols are reprehensible and stand in direct opposition to everything Emory University represents.

There is no place for hate, racism, or intimidation here. We are taking this matter very seriously, and campus safety officials are investigating fully.

To all students, faculty, staff and alumni — and to all members of our larger Emory community who have been harmed by this — please know that we stand with you. You belong here.

We will continue to confront hate with truth and collective resolve. We are committed to fostering a community rooted in dignity, equity and respect.

Interim President

Campus Update

Oct. 28, 2025

On Oct. 27, a group of students discovered a hateful message spray-painted along a trail near Emory’s Oxford College campus. The message was immediately removed.

Emory is investigating the incident with help from multiple departments across the university, including the Emory Police Department, Campus Life and the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance. Anyone who has information about the individual or group that committed this act should contact the Emory Police Department by calling 404-727-6111, emailing police@emory.edu or through the Emory Safe app.

Oxford College Dean Badia Ahad and Darleny Cepin, senior associate dean of Campus Life, addressed the issue and shared support resources in an email message to the Oxford community earlier today.

“We recognize that these incidents can cause pain, fear and anger, especially among those who feel targeted by such language. Such hurtful and divisive messages have no place in our community,” Ahad and Cepin wrote.

As the investigation continues, please remember that Emory offers resources to support students, faculty and staff.

“Oxford is a community rooted in care, integrity, and respect,” Ahad and Cepin said. “We will continue to embody those values by showing compassion, supporting one another, and standing united in our commitment to a campus where every person feels welcome, safe and valued.”
