Student Sustainability Showcase ushers in another eco-conscious academic year

Each year, the Office of Sustainability Initiatives (OSI) welcomes new and returning students into Emory’s longstanding culture of sustainability.

The first Farmers Market of the fall semester happened on Tuesday, Aug. 26,  as students prepared for classes to begin the following day.  A variety of local vendors offer fresh and local produce as well as ready-to-consume products during each market.

This year, students will also be able to win prizes through sustainable actions. Students could acquire reusable bamboo utensils in support of Emory’s Break Free From Plastic pledge. Those who bring their utensils — and reduce their use of disposable utensils — at future markets will receive a punch card to earn prizes from OSI.

That same day, Plastic Free Emory and OSI co-hosted the annual Student Sustainability Showcase on McDonough Field. The showcase highlights Emory’s sustainability-related organizations and makes it easier for interested students to get involved.

The following organizations were at the showcase:

  • Plastic Free Emory
  • Emory Gardening Group
  • Slow Food Emory
  • Sunrise Emory
  • Residence Hall Association
  • Emory Votes Initiatives
  • Emory Environmental Law Society
  • Medical Students for Climate Action
  • Emory Bike Social
  • The Hatchery Emory Center for Innovation
  • Emory Center for Ethics
  • Outdoor Emory
  • Emory Educational Gardens
  • The Pathways Center
  • Emory University Libraries
  • Transportation and Parking Services

The OSI website has additional information on related organizations and volunteer opportunities.

Incorporating sustainability

Living more sustainably is a journey. You can build sustainable habits and awareness by practicing the following:

  • Carry reusable water bottles and utensils instead of disposable alternatives.
  • Use the stairs instead of taking the elevator.
  • Unplug your electronics when they are not in use.
  • Properly sort your waste in residential halls, dining halls and classrooms.
  • Consider reducing your consumption of red meat and exploring plant-based options.
  • Certify your events for sustainability using the Sustainable Events Certification Form.
  • Certify your office or laboratory space with the Green Labs and Green Offices
  • Connect with nature through a walk in Lullwater Preserve or by volunteering in Emory’s Educational Gardens.
  • Practice gratitude and self-care. Well-being is an integral part of sustainability.
