Emory, Oxford libraries help families preserve personal histories

Librarians from Oxford College recently partnered with genealogists to hold a community workshop on preserving family histories through communal storytelling, public records and personal documents and photographs.

Held at Oxford College Library, the event — titled “Making and Preserving Memory” — brought together members of the Emory community, as well as residents of the Covington area and metro Atlanta.

The Oxford College Library, Oxford Historical Society and Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives and Rare Books Library sponsored the gathering.

Participants discussed with experts the connections between personal, public and institutional histories and learned practical ways to preserve family documents — such as keeping old papers in a temperature-stable, cool environment to prevent decay.

Attendees also brought their own boxes of family records for personal consultations with the genealogists, who tailored research advice to each individual’s needs.
