Each May, the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office hosts the International Student Graduation Reception, an opportunity for graduating students to gather alongside their peers and loved ones as their academic achievements are recognized.
The 2025 graduating class included international students from more than 60 countries and many graduates were joined by loved ones who flew across the globe to join them.
Graduates and guests enjoyed a buffet and professional graduation portraits in caps and gowns.
“Through much hard work and dedication, you each have achieved a significant milestone in your lives,” said Interim Provost Lanny Liebeskind during his keynote address. “I am proud to be here to celebrate with you, your families and your friends. The last few years have had their challenges, in many ways, from tackling difficult assignments to navigating a new place and culture, and through it all, all of you have persevered.”
In addition to Liebeskind’s speech, graduates were congratulated by Assistant Vice Provost Shinn Ko and by Vice Provost for Emory Global Engagement Jane Gatewood. Jennifer Valencia from Emory’s Advancement and Alumni Engagement office also welcomed graduates to the Emory alumni community and shared ways they can remain connected with the university.
“When international graduates get involved, they help create vibrant alumni communities in their countries, support the next generation of students and extend Emory’s global impact,” said Valencia.
As the reception drew to its conclusion, graduates continued savoring the moment by chatting and taking group photos.
Neema Naik, who graduated with her Master of Public Health, reflected upon the significance of the reception. “Attending the International Student Graduation Reception was a deeply emotional and surreal experience — it was likely the last time all of us would be together in one place,” said Naik.
"As we stood side by side in our regalia for group photos, it truly felt like a family coming together one final time. There was both joy and bittersweet realization in the air,” Naik continued. “While we celebrated our achievements, we also knew we were about to part ways to pursue dreams in different corners of the world.”
