Update on McDonough Field incident

On Friday, Jan. 10, Emory officials were notified that a racial slur had been written in the snow on McDonough Field. This act is deeply disturbing, divisive and hateful.

Emory’s Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (OIEC) is leading an investigation of this incident with the assistance of other offices. This investigation includes an ongoing review of campus safety camera footage covering McDonough Field and the surrounding areas. To date, we do not have information that may lead to the identification of the individuals or groups that perpetrated this act. Anyone who has such information should submit it to OIEC by email at decrc@emory.edu or by calling 404-712-9108.

Following this incident, Emory leaders have taken steps to connect with our community to understand the impact of this act and to proactively share resources to support well-being.

“Over the past few days, I’ve gotten the chance to talk with members of our community, especially student leaders,” President Gregory L. Fenves said on Thursday. “I’ve heard how shocked, horrified and hurt they are. This hateful act is heartbreaking to me, and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms. There is simply no place for racist language on our campus. It is counter to our most precious values, and we must do better.”

As Emory continues to investigate this incident, please remember that we have resources to support you.
