The 2025 Staff Awards were presented by Zirka Smith, Senior Administrator of the Emory Eye Center and Department of Ophthalmology, on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025.

The Emory Eye Center recently honored its dedicated staff members at its annual awards ceremony, recognizing those who have made significant contributions to the center’s mission of improving eye care, education, and research. The following staff members were awarded for their exceptional leadership, service, and achievements:

Excellence in Leadership Award: Tonya Coleman

The Excellence in Leadership Award recognizes a staff member who demonstrates exceptional leadership and service to the Emory Eye Center. This year’s recipient, Tonya Coleman, has consistently promoted the center’s mission and vision at the department level. Through her innovative, inclusive leadership, she empowers colleagues and drives positive change, setting a high standard for leadership at the Eye Center.

Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award: Jane Kuhlenbeck

Jane Kuhlenbeck was awarded the Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award for her outstanding efforts to foster a climate of inclusivity and organizational equity. Jane has worked to leverage the diverse backgrounds within the Emory Eye Center community, promoting a culture where all staff members and patients feel valued and respected.

Service Champion Award: Lenny Lee

The Service Champion Award recognizes staff members for excellence in service, collaboration, and dedication to Emory Eye Center’s values. Lenny Lee was honored for his exceptional performance in service and teamwork. Lenny’s commitment to collaboration and providing outstanding service has made him a valuable asset to the center’s community.

Innovation Award: Brenda Huffman

Brenda Huffman received the Innovation Award for her role in advancing creativity and efficiency across research, education, and clinical care at the Emory Eye Center. Brenda’s work has contributed to increased operational efficiency, cost savings, and improved patient satisfaction, reflecting her ability to drive meaningful innovation.

G.E.M. (Going the Extra Mile) Award: Chay Washington

The G.E.M. Award honors staff members who consistently go above and beyond their duties. Chay Washington was recognized for her dedication to excellence and her positive impact on the Emory Eye Center. Chay’s willingness to go the extra mile has earned her the respect of her colleagues and the admiration of the wider team.

Patient Whisperer Award: Alisha Gillon

Alisha Gillon was named the Patient Whisperer for her exceptional ability to remain calm and composed when assisting patients. Known for troubleshooting difficult situations with grace, Alisha ensures that all patients receive excellent care while resolving concerns efficiently. Her steady presence has made her a go-to team member for problem-solving.

Unsung Hero Award: Shanice Barnes

The Unsung Hero Award recognizes staff members who make significant contributions behind the scenes, consistently exceeding expectations without seeking recognition. Shanice Barnes was honored for her quiet dedication and her willingness to go above and beyond to support the center’s mission. Shanice’s efforts have made a lasting impact on the Emory Eye Center.

Team Player Award: Regina Loftly

Regina Loftly received the Team Player Award for her commitment to collaboration and effective communication. Known for her reliability, positive attitude, and willingness to support colleagues, Regina has been instrumental in achieving team goals and ensuring the success of the Emory Eye Center.

Fast & Furious Award: Christine Brown

The Fast & Furious Award honors a staff member who, while new to the team, has demonstrated exceptional initiative, self-motivation, and a strong desire to succeed. Christine Brown was recognized for diving into her role and making immediate contributions to the Emory Eye Center. Her proactive approach and eagerness to learn have made her a valuable member of the team.

Beaker Half Full Award: Preston Girardot

Preston Girardot received the Beaker Half Full Award for his outstanding contributions to the research department. As a key member of the team, Preston consistently demonstrates exceptional decision-making and problem-solving skills. Preston’s contributions are crucial to the success of the center’s research efforts.

Beckster Award: Aminata Greene

Aminata Greene was honored with the Beckster Award for her outstanding work and dedication to the Emory Eye Center. Aminata’s contributions play a vital role in the center’s success.

You must comply with the conditions in Section 3(a) if You Share all or a substantial portion of the contents of the database.

For the avoidance of doubt, this Section 4 supplements and does not replace Your obligations under this Public License where the Licensed Rights include other Copyright and Similar Rights.

Section 5 – Disclaimer of Warranties and Limitation of Liability.

Unless otherwise separately undertaken by the Licensor, to the extent possible, the Licensor offers the Licensed Material as-is and as-available, and makes no representations or warranties of any kind concerning the Licensed Material, whether express, implied, statutory, or other. This includes, without limitation, warranties of title, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, absence of latent or other defects, accuracy, or the presence or absence of errors, whether or not known or discoverable. Where disclaimers of warranties are not allowed in full or in part, this disclaimer may not apply to You.
To the extent possible, in no event will the Licensor be liable to You on any legal theory (including, without limitation, negligence) or otherwise for any direct, special, indirect, incidental, consequential, punitive, exemplary, or other losses, costs, expenses, or damages arising out of this Public License or use of the Licensed Material, even if the Licensor has been advised of the possibility of such losses, costs, expenses, or damages. Section 6 – Term and Termination.

This Public License applies for the term of the Copyright and Similar Rights licensed here. However, if You fail to comply with this Public License, then Your rights under this Public License terminate automatically.
Where Your right to use the Licensed Material has terminated under Section 6(a), it reinstates:
1. automatically as of the date the violation is cured, provided it is cured within 30 days of Your discovery of the violation; or

Any arrangements, understandings, or agreements regarding the Licensed Material not stated herein are separate from and independent of the terms and conditions of this Public License.

Section 8 – Interpretation.

For the avoidance of doubt, this Public License does not, and shall not be interpreted to, reduce, limit, restrict, or impose conditions on any use of the Licensed Material that could lawfully be made without permission under this Public License.
To the extent possible, if any provision of this Public License is deemed unenforceable, it shall be automatically reformed to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable.
