Kathleen E. Boin joins Emory Campus Life as associate dean of students

Katie E. Boin will join Emory as associate dean of students on Jan. 6, 2025.

Emory University has named Kathleen (Katie) E. Boin as associate dean of students, effective Jan. 6.

A recognized leader in student affairs, Boin brings 15 years of leadership experience in higher education with a focus on ensuring that students have access to essential resources and support systems for academic and personal flourishing. She will report directly to Kristina Bethea Odejimi, Campus Life’s dean of students and associate vice president for belonging, engagement and community.

In her inaugural role, Boin will serve as a key member of the Dean of Students Leadership Team, providing strategic and operational leadership to a portfolio that includes the Office of Student Conduct and Student Case Management and Intervention Services.

“Katie is a creative, collaborative and passionate professional who brings a wealth of experience and vision to this role,” says Odejimi. “Her exceptional understanding of the opportunities, issues and challenges facing undergraduate, graduate and professional students makes her an ideal addition to the Campus Life team, and we are delighted to have her join us.”

With a full-time staff of 12, the associate dean of students will develop and execute a vision for crisis management structures and care systems across the university, including aligning the student leave and re-entry process. Boin will also play an active role in a variety of multidisciplinary teams, including Bias Support Services, the University CARE Team, Threat Assessment Team and the Leave Review Team.

As the second inaugural dean of students to join Campus Life, Boin will partner with the first, Ashley L. Brown. Together, they will assist Odejimi in building the Office of the Dean of Students. Both new deans share Odejimi’s commitment to providing the support services and nurturing the sense of belonging that enable Emory students to continue flourishing.

“It is an honor to join Campus Life’s incredible team of professionals and support great partners across the university enterprise who are doing such wonderful work on behalf of students. I am eager to share my expertise and help drive a culture of care and a robust safety net for students who encounter difficulty or crisis,” says Boin. “I am particularly excited to do this work in the framework of the university’s Student Flourishing Initiative.”

A strong background in student support services

Boin served most recently with Brown University as senior associate dean and director of student support services. Her broad portfolio included overseeing, implementing and continually assessing a comprehensive student support model for the university’s undergraduate and graduate students.

She led a team of student-support deans, providing oversight for recruitment, selection, onboarding, training and ongoing coaching for professional staff to achieve departmental, divisional and university priorities. Boin chaired the university’s Medical Leave Clearance Committee and stewarded the implementation of the Medical Leave of Absence Policy for all undergraduate students.

At Georgetown University, Boin served as director of student outreach and support in student affairs. She led the university’s Case Management Program, which she built from the ground up, participating in the national conversation on relevant issues and establishing relationships with colleagues across the country.

In 2019, Boin was selected by the Higher Education Case Managers Association (HECMA) leadership to be one of five national experts to co-author the first-ever “Standards for Case Management Programs and Services,” published by the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS).

At both Georgetown and Brown, Boin chaired university care teams and managed a multidisciplinary team of director-level colleagues and senior leaders to discuss students of concern and provide a consultation space to process difficult, challenging or high-risk student incidents and behaviors.

Boin holds a master’s degree in counseling from Michigan State University and a bachelor’s in religious studies from the College of Wooster. She has served on various committees and panels and delivered a range of presentations at professional association conferences and meetings.

An active member of HECMA, Boin is also part of the Ivy Plus (Ivy+) consortium, a core group of 13 leading private research universities from across the country. In addition to her work with HECMA, Boin is also an active member of the Association of Student Conduct Administrators (ASCA) and National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).

In Atlanta, Boin and her family are looking forward to exploring the city, especially the food and restaurant scene, going to as many Braves games as possible, walking Piedmont Park and finding more Tiny Doors.
