John Ellis, who currently serves as interim enterprise CIO and senior vice provost for information technology, will retire at the end of 2024 after more than 20 years of service to Emory.

After more than 20 years of service to Emory, John Ellis plans to retire at the end of the calendar year. Ellis has served as interim enterprise chief information officer (CIO) and senior vice provost for information technology since March 2023. Prior to these roles, Ellis was deputy CIO and held multiple leadership positions at Emory.

Ellis’s retirement was announced Aug. 15 in a joint message from Christopher L. Augostini, executive vice president for business and administration, enterprise chief financial officer, and vice chair of the Emory Healthcare Board of Directors; Ravi V. Bellamkonda, Emory University provost and executive vice president for academic affairs; and Ravi Thadhani, Emory University executive vice president for health affairs, executive director of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center, and vice chair of the Emory Healthcare Board of Directors.

“During his tenure at Emory, John has earned the trust and respect of faculty, staff, students and the broader Emory community,” Augostini, Bellamkonda and Thadhani said in the message. “Most notably, John has made significant contributions to the Emory enterprise by transforming the IT division into what it is today.”

Ellis came to Emory in November 2003 as co-director of academic technologies and went on to serve as director of integration for the IT division. In that role, he directed IT service management, marketing and communications, identity management, web hosting and integration middleware.

In addition to demonstrating a consistent focus on developing IT staff, Ellis also shared his knowledge and insights to develop staff across the university by serving as a mentor for Emory’s Emerging Leaders and Mentor Emory programs.

A transition plan will be shared in the coming weeks, Augostini, Bellamkonda and Thadhani noted.
