A statement from the Division of Campus Life on the events of April 24, 2023

In response to the University Senate’s Committee for Open Expression report, the Division of Campus Life (DCL) is providing the following statement to fulfill its obligations under section 8.14.7.3 of the Respect for Open Expression Policy.

On April 24, 2023, during a 12-hour engagement with organizers of an event on the Quad protesting the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, representatives from DCL worked diligently to support the open expression rights of event participants. The facts of this engagement and all relevant details surrounding the events of that afternoon and evening are fully detailed in the Committee for Open Expression’s report. We agree with facts as presented in section 5 (“Findings”) of this report and do not have additional detail to add.

We were transparent in disseminating information, in engaging with protest organizers after the event, and in sharing our perspective through multiple inquiries and conversations. In hindsight, we understand that the event can be viewed as forcibly terminated and that we did not share the circumstances of the event termination with the full Emory community.

We welcome the opportunity to participate in conversations about improving Emory’s Respect for Open Expression policy and will continue to work to support our students in all of their endeavors.
