Members of the Emory community can enjoy lunchtime music on Friday, April 5, while internationally acclaimed violin prodigy Randall Goosby holds a master class with Emory music students.

The class begins at noon in Emerson Concert Hall of the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. It features three student violinists who will learn from Goosby:

  • Seyon Kim, a fourth-year student studying with Jay Christy and majoring in neuroscience and behavioral biology (NBB) with a minor in music. She will perform Violin Sonata No. 2 in A Major, Movement 3, “Allegretto grazioso (quasi Andante)” by Johannes Brahms.
  • Kaitlyn Kaminuma, a first-year student studying with Emily Daggett Smith who will be declaring a double major that includes music performance. She will perform Violin Concerto, op.14, Movement 1, “Allegro” by Samuel Barber.
  • Carol Xu, a fourth-year student studying with Jessica Shuang Wu and double majoring in economics and human health and music performance. She will perform “Baal Shem,” Movement 2, Nigun by Ernest Bloch.

On Friday evening, Goosby makes his Schwartz Center debut with pianist Zhu Wang during an 8 p.m. performance.

Twenty-six-year-old Goosby debuted with the Jacksonville Symphony at age nine and with the New York Philharmonic on a Young People’s Concert at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall at age 13. A former student of Itzhak Perlman and Catherine Cho, he received his bachelor’s, master’s and artist diploma degrees from the Juilliard School.

Since then, Goosby has performed with acclaimed orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, London Philharmonic and New World Symphony. Recital appearances have included the Kennedy Center, Kravis Center and Wigmore Hall.

“For me, personally, music has been a way to inspire others,” Goosby says, summing up his commitment to being an artist who makes a difference in the world of classical music. His Emory recital showcases this commitment with works by William Grant Still, Florence Price and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, among others.
