Working in Emory’s Apple Digital Innovation and Testing Lab, Emory Digital team members (L-R) Michael Duffell, Jewel Witherspoon and Nicole Picardo Bellis were instrumental in validating Epic Hyperspace on Macs at Emory.

ATLANTA, GA — Emory Healthcare is leading the way in transforming how clinicians access patient health records with its deployment of the 15-inch MacBook Air and the launch of the new native Epic Hyperspace app. This marks the first time Epic will be available to clinicians on the Mac App Store beginning March 7.

Emory Healthcare is the first health system in the U.S. to use Epic — the industry standard electronic health record (EHR) software for clinicians — on Mac at scale. Responding to demand from employees, Emory is planning to make MacBook Air available to thousands of its clinicians in 2024 — in addition to iPhones and iPads used throughout the organizationtoday. In its analysis prior to making the decision, Emory found that using MacBook Air instead of a PC will save $300 per device per year in software licensing and support costs, adding up to hundreds of thousands of dollars of savings per year.

"In an era where technology is helping shape the future of health care and digital transformation, our deployment of Epic on MacBook Air is more than just a technical achievement; it's a statement,” says Scott Smiser, chief technology officer for Emory Healthcare. It underscores our dedication to pushing the boundaries of what's possible and reaffirms our role as catalysts for positive change in the industry.”

The new native Epic Hyperspace app is now available to clinicians in the Mac App Store. Emory Healthcare is the first health system in the U.S. to use Epic electronic health record software on Macs.

Epic comes to the Mac for the first time with no additional application delivery layer, such as a virtual desktop, needed. The Emory Digital team validated this solution at scale in Emory’s Apple Digital Innovation and Testing lab.

“Many clinicians will be excited to use Epic natively on their Macs,” says Seth Howard, Epic’s senior vice president of research and development. “This new app provides the full Epic experience and is available now on the Mac App Store.”

The MacBook Air is a powerhouse for all kinds of work — consumers and employees alike love its iconic thin and light, portable design, incredible display and all-day battery life, says Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of enterprise marketing and worldwide developer relations. We’re thrilled to see the all-new Epic app come to the Mac App Store for the first time, which enables Emory Healthcare to provide the 15-inch MacBook Air to thousands of their clinicians — and for hospitals globally to select Mac as their device of choice when caring for patients.

By offering choice of their preferred computer and direct access to Epic on Mac, doctors at Emory can now choose the best device for them. With a MacBook Air, they get built-in security, power-efficient performance and full-day battery life for a demanding day in the clinic.

"We are so pleased to be able to offer our health care providers choices for how they use Epic,” says Laura Fultz, vice president of applications and digital experience for Emory Digital. Now, our clinicians can run Epic directly on their Mac and are finding a faster, intuitive and delightful user experience.”

In addition to significant cost savings, Apple products include recycled and renewable materials, as well as reducing energy draw by 50%, bringing Emory closer to meeting the sustainability goals set by The Joint Commission.
