After more than 50 years of combined service to Emory, Del King and Theresa Milazzo, vice presidents for human resources, have announced plans to retire in 2024.

King joined Emory in 1997 as director of recruitment, followed by Milazzo in 2000 as director of compensation. Since 2019, the two have served as Emory’s vice presidents for human resources.

“After almost 27 years in human resources at Emory, I've most enjoyed the opportunity to work with a dynamic and diverse community of faculty and staff,” says King. “Being able to contribute to developing and implementing policies and programs that support the well-being and professional growth of individuals has been immensely fulfilling, and seeing the positive impact of our work on the Emory community has been truly rewarding.”

“It’s hard to believe that almost 24 years have passed since I joined Emory,” says Milazzo. “I feel very fortunate to have worked with our great HR team on so many projects and programs to support our faculty and staff, and I’m very proud of what we have been able to accomplish. I’ll miss the wonderful people I’ve had the honor to work with, across Emory — it’s a really exceptional community here and I am so grateful and proud to be a part of it.”

King and Milazzo’s appreciation of the Emory community has been tangible throughout their tenures, as noted by those who have worked closely with them.

“Del and Theresa’s contributions to Emory have been extensive,” says Chris Augostini, executive vice president for business and administration and chief financial officer. “Their caring commitment to Emory’s staff and faculty was invaluable during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the programs and initiatives they have led through their years of service will have an enduring impact.”

King and Milazzo’s exact retirement dates will be in alignment with the overall transition plan to ensure continuity of leadership in HR and they will both continue to be highly engaged in their work and teams. In the coming weeks, a national search for the university’s chief human resources officer will be launched.
