ISSS offers intercultural communication training series for faculty and staff

As Emory University continues to foster a campus environment that embraces diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), faculty and staff can support this commitment by enhancing their own DEI proficiency.

“Understanding and navigating cultural differences is a vital aspect of DEI proficiency,” says Shinn Ko, assistant vice provost in International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). “Therefore, training Emory’s faculty and staff in intercultural competencies is critical to ensure Emory is a welcoming and inclusive space.”

In support of this initiative, ISSS will offer a virtual series of intercultural communication workshops tailored for the university’s faculty and staff during March. This comprehensive, three-part series is designed to equip participants with essential intercultural communication skills, enabling them to engage effectively and appropriately across diverse cultural backgrounds when interacting with colleagues, students and community members.

“The intercultural communication workshops were fantastic — well worth the time,” says Christina Glon, associate law librarian for research services at Emory’s MacMillan Law Library. “I’ve encouraged my team to invest the time to attend the entire three-workshop series. The workshops have truly changed the way I see the world and continue to help me navigate it every day.”

Participants who finish all three workshops will receive a certificate of completion, providing tangible evidence of their commitment to developing their DEI competency during annual performance evaluations.

All sessions will be on Zoom from 9:30-11 a.m. The dates and topics include:

  • Monday, March 4: “Intercultural Communication Part 1: Cultural Self-Awareness”
  • Monday, March 18: “Intercultural Communication Part 2: Understanding Others”
  • Monday, March 25: “Intercultural Communication Part 3: Developing Intercultural Competencies”

Faculty and staff can register by logging into Emory Self Service. Select “Learning Management” and then select “Brainier.” Search for “Intercultural Communication Workshop Series.” Then, click “Start” under “Step 1: Intercultural Communication Skills, Part 1: Cultural Self-Awareness.” The series must be completed sequentially.
