The Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing has added eight scholars and clinicians to its faculty – mid-year appointments that reflect the school’s growth in enrollment and research.
Enrollment at the school has grown 38% over the past five years, while research funding has grown from $12.8 million to $32.3 million. The school is #5 among U.S. nursing schools in National Institutes of Health funding.
“We are excited to have this group of strong and highly regarded researchers and academicians help us meet this growth and continue to impact the nursing profession,” says Linda McCauley, PhD, RN, FAAN, FRCN, dean of the School of Nursing.
Meet the new faculty members:
Katie Cole, DNP, CRNA
Assistant Clinical Professor
Previous position: Senior Clinical Instructor, Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing; Nurse Anesthetist, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta
Teaching/research: Cole teaches a broad range of courses in the nurse anesthesia program, including physics for nurse anesthetists, advanced pathophysiology, and nurse anesthesia applications. Her scholarship focuses primarily on simulation development and aligning teaching methodologies with best practices to improve learning outcomes and experiences.
Jasmine Ellington, DNP, AGACNP-BC, CEN
Assistant Clinical Professor
Previous position: Cardiovascular Clinical Nurse Specialist, Wellstar Cardiovascular Medicine; Doctor of Nursing Practice student, Mercer University College of Nursing
Teaching/research: Ellington’s work examines the intersection of the social determinants of health and race and the impact on health equity. She is also passionate about implementing innovative approaches using health technology and artificial intelligence to address health inequities.
Youjeong Kang, PhD, MPH
Assistant Professor
Previous position: Assistant Professor, University of Utah College of Nursing
Teaching/research: Kang is conducting a randomized controlled trial study examining the feasibility and acceptability of home-based symptom monitoring for heart failure patients. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute is funding the study.
Se Jung Kwon, PhD
Assistant Research Professor
Previous position: Post-doctoral Fellow, Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing
Teaching/research: Kwon’s research focuses on real-world problem-solving and enhancing human performance. She is a skilled instructional innovation designer and program evaluator with expertise in authentic learning using emerging technologies.
Patti E. Landerfelt, DNP, APRN, CRNA, CCRN, CEN
Assistant Clinical Professor
Previous position: Senior Clinical Instructor, Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing; Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, MAK Anesthesia
Teaching/research: Landerfelt’s research focuses on nursing leadership and the effects of leadership on hospital-acquired infections and the nursing workforce. She coordinates pathophysiology and adult and geriatric nursing didactic courses for pre-licensure students at the School of Nursing.
Louisa Dasher Martin, PhD, CRNA
Assistant Clinical Professor
Title/institution: Assistant Professor, Nursing Anesthesia Program, Augusta University College of Nursing
Teaching/research: Martin’s research program centers on incivility in the workplace and nursing learning environments. Her teaching experience includes didactic, clinical and scholarly instruction for graduate nursing anesthesia students.
Sharon Eve Sonenblum, PhD
Associate Research Professor
Previous position: Principal Research Scientist, George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology
Teaching/research: Sonenblum’s research program spans pressure injury prevention, detection and etiology, and wheelchair seating and mobility. She studies the impact of behavior on pressure injury development, technology’s role in behavior modification, and tissue responses to loading across diverse skin tones.
Ryan Suk, PhD, MS
Assistant Professor
Previous position: Assistant Professor, University of Florida College of Pharmacy
Teaching/research: Suk is a health economist specializing in applying real-world data and decision modeling, with research interests encompassing HPV-associated cancer, multi-level social determinants of health, and LGBTQ+ health.
