The National Institute of Nursing Research has awarded a $1.7 million grant to Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing faculty for research training in women's health and intersectionality using data science and health information technology.

The grant was awarded to associate professor Rasheeta Chandler, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, and professor Vicki Hertzberg, PhD, FASA, who also serves as a director of the school’s Center for Data Science. The five-year, T32 Research Project grant will prepare nurse scientists to employ data science and health information technology to improve women’s health while considering the intersectionality of multiple social determinants of health.

“Social disadvantage and marginalization due to the interconnected nature of multiple social determinants of health are associated with women’s adverse health outcomes,” says Chandler. “The use of data science and health information technology will improve research effectiveness by providing strategies that would not be possible without these methodologies.”

The program will train pre-doctoral and post-doctoral nursing scientists within interdisciplinary teams and build on the strengths of the School of Nursing’s currently funded research studies, faculty expertise and supporting infrastructure, adds Hertzberg.
