Veterans Day

Emory Healthcare Veterans Program (EHVP) is honoring Veterans Day 2023 and recognizing the extraordinary contributions of those who served in the United States Armed Forces. During November and throughout the year, EHVP maintains an unwavering commitment to improving the health of veterans and active-duty service members.

EHVP is one of four academic medical centers in the United States supported by Wounded Warrior Project’s Warrior Care Network, a national network of academic medical center partners connecting post-9/11 wounded service members and their families with quality mental healthcare. EHVP also leads research efforts to advance the understanding and treatment of mental health concerns affecting veterans, striving to improve the lives of those who have served our nation.

Representatives from EHVP, including leadership and veteran outreach coordinators, are paying tribute during this month of remembrance by attending and supporting local and national observance events. They are continuing efforts to treat veterans and active-duty service members while raising awareness about the available resources and treatment options the program provides. Some of the outreach initiatives include:

  • November 1-4 – WCN and International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies Annual Meeting
  • November 2-3 – Delta Airlines Veterans Day Celebration
  • November 4 – Georgia Department of Veterans Services Women Veterans Symposium
  • November 5 – Atlanta Falcons Call to Service game
  • November 6 – Salute Military Golf Association Nation’s Hero Golf Tournament
  • November 10 – Emory University Veterans Day Observance
  • November 10 – TWA Veteran Legal Services Clinic
  • November 11 – Parade and Veterans Expo at Woodruff Arts Center

Since EHVP launched in 2015, it has served more than 5,000 warriors affected by invisible wounds of war, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma, depression and anxiety. Treatment options include outpatient and intensive outpatient programs which integrate care in multiple areas including psychiatry, psychology, neurology, sleep, rehabilitative medicine, case management, wellness and family support.

A major component of EHVP’s treatment efforts includes its two-week intensive outpatient program (IOP), offering customizable, evidence-based treatment and wellness guidance to optimize warriors’ success. Results demonstrate that the program is highly effective and leads to large reductions in PTSD and depression symptoms, including suicidal thoughts and actions.

“On Veterans Day, and every day, the Emory Healthcare Veterans Program extends our heartfelt gratitude to all of America’s veterans who proudly defended our nation.  It is an honor and privilege to serve you and your families,” says Emory Healthcare Veterans Program founder and executive director Barbara O. Rothbaum, PhD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Emory University School of Medicine.
