Emory University’s annual benefits enrollment is your opportunity to review your medical, dental, vision and other benefit elections and make any changes necessary to ensure your choices continue to meet your needs. This year’s annual enrollment period will take place from Monday, Oct. 23, through Monday, Nov. 6, 2023. Changes to benefit elections will go into effect on Monday, Jan. 1, 2024. Here are ten things you should know:

  1. Medical, dental and vision plans have options. For medical coverage, you still have the same three plan options: the Aetna HSA Plan, the Aetna POS Plan and the Kaiser Permanente Plan. Medical plan rates are increasing slightly due to the overall increased costs associated with the plan. There are no changes to the dental or vision plans for 2024 and rates will remain unchanged. If you do not participate in annual enrollment, your current coverage in these plans will roll over for 2024.
  2. HSA plan deductible is changing. Due to IRS regulations, the HSA Plan deductible is changing to: $1,650/$3,300 (single/family) for Tier 1, $1,900/$3,750 for Tier 2 and $2,850/$5,700 for Tier 3. For more details, refer to the Medical Plan Comparison chart.
  3. Contribute to your Health Savings Account (HSA). If you have an HSA, you can contribute more in the upcoming year; the maximum allowed is going up to $4,150 (single) and $8,300 (family).
  4. Set aside money for your Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). Paying for your medical or childcare costs with pretax dollars saves you money because you pay less in taxes. You can contribute from $200 to $3,050 to a health care FSA and up to $5,000 to a dependent day care FSA. If you wish to participate in an FSA for 2024, you must enroll (or re-enroll) and select how much you wish to set aside.
  5. Check out medical plan and well-being incentives. You and a covered spouse can offset your medical expenses in 2024 by participating in a new menu of well-being activities such as challenges, a financial wellness checkup, the Winship 5K and more. Participation in the 2024 incentives begins on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024, and continues through Friday, Nov. 15, 2024.
  6. Note changes to the Metlife Prepaid Legal Plan. The monthly rate for the Metlife Prepaid Legal plan is increasing from $15.74 to $16.74. The plan will also offer expanded caregiver benefits offering support in areas such as family members with dementia, aging in place, crisis intervention, insurance and Medicare navigation and homecare and placement.
  7. Use the ALEX® Tool. Using ALEX can help you better understand your benefits options so you can make smart, cost-effective choices. This interactive tool can help you find your lowest-cost medical plan options and will provide personalized, confidential recommendations about your benefits. The tool offers some expanded features this year including the addition of ALEX Go, a compact, efficient, text-based interactive experience available in both English and Spanish.
  8. Attend webinars. You have the opportunity to attend a benefits webinar and hear directly from university benefits staff as they give an overview of benefits programs and review the changes for 2024. All sessions are held via Zoom. Dates, times and registration links are posted on the annual enrollment webpage.
  9. Check your beneficiaries. Emory provides life insurance benefits, so you must designate a beneficiary even if you do not sign up for supplemental life insurance benefits. While completing your enrollment in the self-service portal, it only takes a few minutes to make sure you have the correct people listed as your beneficiaries. While you’re at it, also take some time to check your beneficiaries on your retirement account with Fidelity and/or TIAA. Instructions can be found in the retirement plan user guide (see page 8).
  10. Enroll Online. Log on to Self-Service/PeopleSoft and get started. Emory’s annual enrollment period will close at midnight on Monday, Nov. 6. For more information about your benefits options for 2024, including instructions on how to enroll, visit the annual enrollment webpage.
