Rebecca Martin, PhD, vice president for Global Health at Emory University and director of the Emory Global Health Institute (EGHI), begins a three-year appointment to the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) Board of Directors. This is the first time an Emory faculty member will serve in this important role.

Martin joins the board at a critical time in global health and will work with her peers to develop a new CUGH strategic plan as a priority. “Rebecca’s expertise in public health, the CDC, and so many other areas will be of immense value to our organization, our members and the broader, and international community as we strive to improve the wellbeing of people and the planet," says Honourable Keith Martin, MD, PC, executive director of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health.

Established in 2008, CUGH is an organization of over 180 academic institutions and other organizations from around the world focused on improving global health through education, research, service, and advocacy.  Aligned with Emory University’s 2036 goals to support student flourishing, faculty eminence, and research excellence, Martin is honoured for the opportunity to bring to her appointment the eminence and heart of Emory University to serve as a catalyst for positive change in the world.

In her roles as V.P. for Global Health at Emory and director of EGHI, Martin is working to establish synergies and linkages among diverse programs and initiatives to shape a more comprehensive global health discourse, strategy, and impact.

Her top five priorities include:

  1. Growing the university’s multidisciplinary global health infrastructure
  2. Fostering scientific collaborations among Emory’s faculty, staff, students, global health organizations and other nations
  3. Achieving more equitable partnerships
  4. Encouraging interdisciplinary research aimed at addressing health disparities from Georgia to the world
  5. Building and empowering the next generation of global health leaders
