End the semester on a high note with these arts events

A new month means a fresh lineup of arts events and opportunities across campus. Want to see the premier of a new play that mixes Greek tragedy with one of our favorite contemporary pop divas? How about an outdoor jazz performance? From concerts and masterclasses to film screenings and lectures, there’s something for everyone at Emory this April.

Learn new things at a lecture

Many lectures that are free and open to the public will be held across Emory this month. On Tuesday, April 4, at 6 p.m., Anna Maria Gehnyei (also known as Karima 2G) gives a presentation on her book “Il Corpo Nero (The Black Body)” in White Hall, Room 101. Gehnyei, a rapper, dancer and producer born in Rome, speaks about her life and experience growing up as a second-generation Italian.

On Thursday, April 6, Emory's Art History Department presents the Heath Lecture in Modern and Contemporary Art, "Damage and Unity in Melvin Edwards' Sculpture" by Elise Archias, at 6 p.m. in the Michael C. Carlos Museum’s Ackerman Hall. On Sunday, April 16, novelist Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni gives the Sheth Lecture in Indian Studies, discussing and reading from her new book, “Independence.” The lecture will take place at 4 p.m. in Ackerman Hall, and the book can be purchased from the Carlos Museum Bookshop.

Oxford College hosts New York Times bestselling author Sam Kean on Wednesday, April 12, for a lecture and book signing. Kean’s book, “The Icepick Surgeon,” weaves togther history, ethics, science and medicine as he explores common — and uncommon — scientific knowledge. The free event will be at 6:30 p.m. in Williams Hall Auditorium.

If you’re interested in archeology, don’t miss “Digital Archaeology in Egypt: New Methods for Documentation Through the Use of Three-Dimensional Technology” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20. In this lecture, Mohamed Abdelaziz of Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities will discuss the ways in which new applications of photogrammetry have advanced the field. The lecture is free and entirely virtual, but advance registration is required.

Enjoy theater, whether on stage or on screen

Theater Emory opens the final show of its 2022-23 season, “Britney Approximately: A Pop Greek Tragedy” on Thursday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. The production is written and directed by Megan Tabaque, with original music by Prerit Chaudhary and Willa Barnett. The new play mixes Eurpides’ Medea with a loose retelling of the Britney Spears conservatorship court battle. One part bombastic and violent Greek tragedy and one hundred parts tragic-pop-diva-revenge-song, this play asks: What does our treatment of celebrity say about us? The show runs April 6-16 in The Mary Gray Munroe Theater, with evening and afternoon performances. General admission tickets are required.

Emory Cinematheque’s “Camp Vibes, Queer Feelings” film screening series comes to a close this month. The final film screenings occur on April 5, 12 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. in White Hall, Room 208. This month includes “Addams Family Values,” “But I’m a Cheerleader,” “Saved!” and “The Righteous Gemstones.” Learn more about each film on the Emory Cinematheque website.

Find your vibe through student ensemble concerts

As the last full month of the academic year, April provides many opportunities to hear some of Emory’s finest student musicians.

The Emory Jazz Combos perform not one, but two, Jazz on the Green concerts this month on the Patterson Green in front of the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts, at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 6, and Thursday, April 20.

In addition, the Emory Big Band performs at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, in the Schwartz Center’s Emerson Concert Hall. The concert will feature a range of traditional big band music and works by many of today’s composers and arrangers.

On Friday, April 14, the Emory Wind Ensemble will perform “Songs with Friends” at 8 p.m. in the Schwartz Center’s Emerson Concert Hall, featuring music by Richard Strauss, Carolyn Bremer and student composer Eli Parrish. The concert will be free, with no tickets required, and will also be live-streamed.

At 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, Emory Voice Students will present StageWorks 2023 at the Performing Arts Studio, featuring a variety of selections from opera and musical theater.

The Emory Chamber Ensembles concert at 2 p.m. in the Schwartz Center’s Emerson Concert Hall on Sunday, April 16, will feature chamber works for strings, brass, winds, percussion and guitar. Then, at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 16, the Emory Concert Choir will present its annual spring concert, also at Emerson Concert Hall.

The Emory Gamelan Ensemble presents An Evening of Classical Javanese Shadow Puppetry at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 21, at the Performing Arts Studio, featuring traditional gamelan music while puppeteers share the story of the music through Javanese shadow puppets.

The Emory University Symphony Orchestra and University Chorus team up to conclude the month’s student performances. They will present Carl Orff’s iconic “Carmina Burana” and the premiere of a new orchestral work by Sofia Rocha, winner of the second annual SCPA Composer Commission Project. Performances take place at in the Schwartz Center’s Emerson Concert Hall on Saturday, April 22, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 23, at 4 p.m.

All student ensemble concerts are free and open to the public.

Take the chance to hear guest musicians

The Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta (ECMSA) puts on one of their Cooke Noontime Series with Emory's Young Artists at the Carlos Museum’s Ackerman Hall on Friday, April 14. The noon concert is free and open to the public. ECMSA is also hosting a Masterclass with Zhenwei Shi, a world-class violist, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, at the Schwartz Center’s Tharp Rehearsal Hall. The masterclass is free and no tickets are required.

The Schwartz Center closes out its 20th Anniversary Season with Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer and Zakir Hussain, with Rakesh Chaurasia at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 20. The highly acclaimed genre-bending trio is joined by Indian flutist Rakesh Chaurasia for a powerful four-way musical dialogue at the Schwartz Center’s Emerson Concert Hall.

The following weekend, Atlanta Master Chorale returns to Emerson Concert Hall for a two-night performance of High Lonesome Bluegrass Mass, at 8 p.m. Friday, April 28, and Saturday, April 29. The program features music that is inspired by the folk songs and hymns that arise out of the bluegrass tradition, featuring the Chuck Nation Band. Tickets are required for both events and can be purchased on the Schwartz Center’s box office website.

Watch an Emory Dance performance

The Emory Dance Company presents its annual Spring Concert with four performances on April 20, 21 and 22 (nightly at 7:30 p.m., plus a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday). Not only is the Emory Dance Company made up of Emory’s finest student dancers, but this spring concert also features new works by student choreographers. Tickets for the EDC Spring Concert can be purchased online. The Emory Dance Department also hosts an Informal Showing at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 24, with students from a variety of dance classes performing work learned or created during the semester.

Section 5 – Disclaimer of Warranties and Limitation of Liability.

Unless otherwise separately undertaken by the Licensor, to the extent possible, the Licensor offers the Licensed Material as-is and as-available, and makes no representations or warranties of any kind concerning the Licensed Material, whether express, implied, statutory, or other.
