Emory Eagles have plenty to celebrate, from winning championships in volleyball, men’s cross country and Oxford women’s tennis to hosting opening rounds of the upcoming NCAA  Division III women’s soccer tournament. It’s not too late to catch some of the action — and it’s a great way to roll into the winter sports season.

Women’s soccer

For the fourth consecutive season, the Emory women’s soccer team is headed to the NCAA Division III championship tournament — and Emory will play the opening round at home for the first time since 2013.

Chosen as one of the 16 opening-round host sites for the upcoming weekend, Emory (12-4) will face Piedmont University (12-5-3) in the first round on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. The winner of that match will face the victor of Washington & Lee versus Centre at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13. All play will be on the Woodruff P.E. Center soccer field, so come cheer them to victory.

This marks the Emory women’s soccer team’s 20th appearance in the NCAA tournament in program history and the 12th appearance under head coach Sue Patberg.

Cross country

The Emory men’s cross country team made history on Saturday, Oct. 29, in Hampton, Georgia, by winning its first-ever team title at the UAA Championships. The Eagles turned in the program’s best conference championship performance by racking up 48 points and seeing each scoring runner finish in the top 20. Emory head coach Linh Nguyen and assistant coach Chris Marco were named the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.

On the women’s cross country team, senior Annika Urban won the 2022 UAA Championship with a time of 21:14.4, the first Emory winner since 2001. Urban’s time outpaced the next closest runner by more than 20 seconds. The women’s team finished fourth out of eight teams for the second consecutive year.

Both teams will continue at the NCAA South Regional Championships in Newport News, Virginia, on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Volleyball

For the third time in four seasons, Emory’s volleyball team (21-6) won the UAA championship, with a victory over Washington University in Brooklyn, New York, last weekend. Now, the team heads to NCAA Regionals in Lexington, Kentucky.

Ranked No. 6, the Eagles will take on the Bethany Bison (17-12) in the first round on Thursday, Nov. 10.

This marks the Eagles’ 26th consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament, with head coach Jenny McDowell at the helm for each one.

Oxford Athletics

The Oxford College women’s cross country team brought home a trophy as well, finishing third in the NJCAA DIII National Championship, held in Westfield, Massachusetts. The championship was close, with just a three-point spread between first and third place. Sophomore Emily Wilhelm finished in the top ten and is the Region XVII runner of the year.

Women’s tennis won its seventh straight national championship, taking home the trophy for the NJCAA DIII Women’s Tennis National Championship. Head coach Pernilla Hardin also credits assistant coaches Ina Jones and Gwen Blount for being an “instrumental part” of the season’s success.
