It’s officially fall, which means the temperatures are cooling down but activities here at Emory are heating up. We’ve rounded up just a few things you can check out this month.

1. Take Pride.

Atlanta’s Pride Parade is happening on Sunday, Oct. 9, and Emory wants to see you there! If you missed registration for the pre-event breakfast shuttles, you can still march — just meet the Emory contingent at the parade site in Midtown Atlanta by 11:30 a.m. Look for Emory in Row A near the corner of Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard and Spring Street. You can find more details here.

2. Make your pledge to vote.

Election Day is coming up in Georgia, so make sure your registration is up-to-date by Oct. 11. Help top 1,000 pledges for the Emory Votes Initiative and find out more about Emory as a polling place.

3. Discover a student-curated exhibit.

A fourth-year student at Emory curated the latest exhibit at the Woodruff Library, on display now through Friday, Oct. 14, as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. Arturo Contreras is majoring in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and curated the exhibit entitled “Consciousness is Power: A Record of Emory Latinx History.”

4. Enjoy beautiful music, including by Emory students.

Emory has no shortage of great musical options in October. Listen to Alec Chien, a recently retired professor of music and chair of the music department at Allegheny College, on piano Saturday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m. He has performed and taught on four continents and been a soloist with nearly a dozen different symphonies.

Or, catch the Emory Concert Choir and University Chorus during their fall Homecoming concert on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. Then, listen to the Emory Wind Ensemble on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 4 p.m. Round out your musical month with a performance by the Emory University Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m. Each event is free and takes place at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts.

5. Celebrate Emory’s Homecoming, Oct. 16-23.

This year’s Homecoming is sure to be a blast. With artists like Tai Verdes, Bea Miller, Maddie & Tae and Orleans, there’s a concert for everyone to enjoy during Saturday’s food and music festival. Plus: join the fun of chalking the campus, check out the food trucks, attend a garden party on the Clairmont campus and don’t miss the parade at 12 p.m. Saturday. Check out the full list of events here

6. Take a trip to Tibet.

Who says you have to travel abroad to learn more about other cultures? Head to the Carlos Museum from Monday, Oct. 17, through Saturday, Oct. 22, for Tibet Week. Monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery will be in residence constructing the sand mandala of Akshobhya, the unshakeable victor for conflict resolution and peace.

There will also be daily meditations, lectures around Buddhist traditions and beliefs, a student studio and more. You can find the full week’s schedule here.

7. Catch a conversation at the Carlos.

Two great speakers are coming to the Carlos Museum this month, and both presentations are free. Hear from Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter Dionne Searcy about mining for minerals, moving away from reliance on fossil fuels and how the workers doing the mining are placed in grave danger. The event will be Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m.; register here.

Prefer fiction? Dive into a conversation with author and art historian James Cahill about his new debut novel, “Tiepolo Blue,” via Zoom on Friday, Oct. 28, at 12 p.m.

8. Grow or purchase fresh produce (and more!).

Passionate about sustainability? Have an itch to dig in the dirt? Emory’s got you covered. Volunteer at one of Emory’s educational gardens; each slot is just one hour long and no tools are needed. View the schedule and sign up here.

You can also visit the Emory Farmers Market every Tuesday through Nov. 29 (but not Oct. 11, when it's on hiatus for Fall Break) to purchase produce, snacks and other items from local farmers, small business owners and artisans. The farmers market is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on McDonough Field.

9. Cheer the Eagles to victory.

Fall sports are happening at both the Atlanta and Oxford campuses. Head to a tennis match or watch the cross country and soccer teams compete at Oxford. Or, catch tennis, soccer, cross country, swimming/diving and women’s volleyball on the Atlanta campus. Whatever event you choose, be sure to show up in your Emory spirit wear! Find the latest schedules on the Oxford College Athletics site and the Emory Eagles Athletics site.
