The search for the next director of Emory’s Michael C. Carlos Museum has been announced by Ravi V. Bellamkonda, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.
The Carlos Museum plays a pivotal role in the life of the campus and the greater Atlanta community. Through world-class permanent collections, special exhibitions, innovative programming and one-of-a-kind opportunities to engage with art firsthand, the Carlos Museum serves Emory and the Atlanta community as a dynamic interdisciplinary center that cultivates literacy in the arts and fosters understanding of diverse cultures.
In 2021, after the retirement of longtime director Bonnie Speed, Bonna Wescoat, professor of art history and former faculty curator, took on the role of interim director of the Carlos Museum.
“With its many opportunities for students and faculty, from classes and lectures to internships and Student Studio, the Carlos Museum is known for its many hands-on and one-of-a-kind interdisciplinary research and cultural contributions to the Emory campus,” Bellamkonda notes. “I look forward to a deepening and an expansion of those contributions with the support of a new director and our vice provost for libraries and museum, Dr. Valeda F. Dent.”
Community listening sessions
The Carlos Museum collects, preserves, exhibits and interprets art and artifacts from antiquity to the present in order to provide unique opportunities for education and enrichment in the community and to promote interdisciplinary teaching and research at Emory.
The search committee for the museum’s next director is co-chaired by Christa Acampora, deputy provost for academic affairs and professor of philosophy, and María M. Carrión, department chair of religion and professor in comparative literature and religion. The committee began meeting Feb. 10, with the goal of having a new director in place for the coming academic year.
Members of the search advisory committee request community input about what they see as the most important attributes for the new director and are arranging virtual community listening sessions:
- Students: Wednesday, March 2, 3-3:30 p.m. Join through Zoom here.
- Faculty and staff: Wednesday, March 2, 3:40-4 p.m. Join through Zoom here.
