More than 600 attendees enjoyed the festivities of Oxford’s Family Weekend 2021.

Oxford College hosted a record number of families for a weekend of fun and discovery on Oct. 22-24. More than 600 family members and friends attended Family Weekend 2021 to experience a taste of college life with their first- and second-year students. Highlights included a Fun Run, tours of the Organic Farm, and the fall play—this year, a fresh adaptation of Shakespeare’s As You Like It— performed in the forested Hearn Nature Trail.

“We were pleased to welcome so many families this year, especially since we were unable to host them on campus last year due to the pandemic,” said Joe Moon, Dean of Campus Life. “It’s always great to meet our students’ families and friends and introduce them to our close-knit community here at Oxford.”

The day started with the annual 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run, followed by a coffee reception on the Quad. A presentation on parenting college students preceded Dean Doug Hicks’s overview of Oxford’s educational priorities and plans for the future. By then the sun was out and the weather was warm; it was a perfect time for a picnic lunch.

In the afternoon, faculty, staff, alumni, students, and families chose from a variety of activities. Some went to the men’s basketball game, while others toured campus or the library’s special collections. The Center for Healthful Living led bike tours around the historic city of Oxford.

Students and their parents could drop by booths at the student center to learn tips on how to be fiscally responsible on campus or attend a presentation on Oxford’s Community of Care, focused on how students can follow the College’s core principles.

“This year we offered a wide variety of activities and events that highlight all there is to do on and around campus,” said Veronica Roman, Associate Director of Campus Life. “We were excited to be able to show those closest to our students what opportunities we offer and what everyday life is like here at Oxford.”

After sundown, families went off to dinner or further explored the College’s historic surroundings before returning to the amphitheater to enjoy performances put on by student organizations.

“We hope families left with a better understanding of what Oxford offers their students and students had a chance to connect and recharge mid-semester,” said Moon. “That’s what Family Weekend is all about.”
