In recognition of National Donate Life Month, Emory Transplant Center held a special Donate Life flag raising ceremony on April 8, 2019, at Emory University Hospital to pay tribute to those who have given the gift of life through organ donation.

In 2018, 461 organ transplants were performed at Emory University Hospital. Of that number, 367 transplants were made possible by donor families who honored the decisions of their deceased loved ones. There were also 94 kidney transplants from living donors in 2018 at Emory.

“In Georgia, 297 people donated organs through deceased organ donation, with 16 deceased donors coming from Emory hospitals,” says Adam Webb, MD, associate professor of neurology, neurosurgery and neurocritical care, Emory University School of Medicine. “We are truly grateful to these families who selflessly carry out the wishes of their loved ones during their times of loss.”

More than 5,100 Georgians are waiting for life-saving organs.

Celebrated in April each year, National Donate Life Month features an entire month of local, regional and national activities to help encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to celebrate those that have saved lives through the gift of donation.
