The Center for the Study of Human Health, Emory College’s groundbreaking program that integrates the liberal arts into Emory’s cutting-edge efforts in health and research, has launched a new partnership aimed at increasing awareness of food insecurity among students.
The #EmoryBandTogether initiative, developed with the Center for Student Success Programs and Services, will collect donations through March 1 to provide 100 students with five meals each during Spring Break.
Among planned activities to raise awareness are Wonderful Wednesday giveaways on Feb. 27 and a Tasty Tuesday at the Emory Farmers Market on March 5.
In addition, the program is asking students to complete an online survey and inviting faculty to an open house on March 4 at the Emory Food Co-op in Bread Coffeehouse.
The effort is an expanded version of a four-day food drive in 2018 that resulted in 350 donated food and hygiene products to restock the Emory Food Co-op in Bread Coffeehouse.
By including Human Health’s Healthy Eating Partners and doctoral nutrition students from the Laney Graduate School, the program now incorporates a nutritional educational component to the campaign, which will still also push to build empathy and increase access.
Donations can be dropped off at over several locations around campus. Among items most needed are high-protein foods such as peanut butter, canned tuna and low-sodium beans as well as pasta sauce, whole grain pasta and canned fruit. Shampoo and conditioner are also needed.
Drop-off locations include the following:
- Bread Coffeehouse, 1227 Clifton Road, Monday through Thursday, 12-4 p.m., through Feb. 28 only
- Center for Study of Human Health, 107 Candler Library, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
