Emory community encouraged to take MARTA survey to advocate for Clifton Corridor

Editor’s note: Betty Willis, Emory’s senior associate vice president for government and community affairs, sent the following letter to the Emory community on Aug. 27 urging readers to participate in an online MARTA survey seeking input on proposed projects, including the Clifton Corridor Transit Initiative, which would bring light rail to the Emory area. The deadline to take the survey is Friday, Aug. 31.

To the Emory Community:

The Clifton Corridor Transit line – four miles of light rail connecting the rest of the region with the Clifton Corridor via the Lindbergh MARTA station – is just six weeks away from passing a major milestone in its 20+ year journey from concept to reality. The result will be improved access to employment and health care, as well as reduced traffic congestion and a healthier environment.

The benefits of this transit line are significant:

  • Better access to jobs and health care. Emory is the second largest employer in Metro Atlanta and together with our neighbors – the CDC, CHOA’s Egleston hospital, the VA Medical Center and other local institutions and businesses, comprise the largest employment center in the region with no direct access to MARTA or the interstate system.
  • Improved quality of life. With light rail as an option, our city and community will experience reduced traffic on our streets, cars in our parking lots, and pollution in our air as students, faculty, staff, patients and visitors have a more efficient and cost-effective way to get here.

MARTA is scheduled to vote on final project funding for this and other local transit initiatives on Oct. 4. They have issued a survey to collect feedback and I strongly encourage advocates of bringing rail transit to Emory complete this short survey.

The survey closes on Friday, Aug. 31, so time is of the essence. Your voice in this conversation is urgently needed and I thank you in advance for your support!

To take additional action, please email the MARTA board and the Atlanta City Council members below with the following message: “The Clifton Corridor is very important to me and transit connectivity to MARTA would have significant benefits to the Atlanta region. The Clifton transit line will be competing with other cities across the country for limited federal funding and is a strong contender for Atlanta to realize a $1B MARTA expansion—the largest in two decades."
