Symposium encourages students to seek STEM graduate degrees from Emory

A student presents her research to the Emory community during the 2015 STEM Research and Career Symposium. This year's symposium is set for Sept. 18-20; research presentations on Sept. 19 are open to the Emory public to attend.

Convened and organized by the Laney Graduate School, the annual STEM Research and Career Symposium will welcome more than 115 students from underrepresented groups to the Emory campus Sept. 18-20.

Participants will include outstanding undergraduates intending to pursue the PhD or MD/PhD, as well as graduate students seeking postdoctoral opportunities.

In addition to networking and recruitment opportunities, students will also hear from two keynote speakers who are Emory alumni: Chad Jackson, science policy adviser in the Office of Science and Technology Adviser to U.S. Secretary of State, who earned his PhD in molecular and systems pharmacology from Emory in 2010; and Michael Lomax, president and CEO of the United Negro College Fund, who earned his PhD in American and African-American literature from Emory in 1984.

Additionally, students will present their research in a wide variety of scientific categories through both oral and poster presentations.

These scientific sessions — taking place at the Emory Conference Center on Sept. 19 — are open to the Emory public. All Emory faculty, students and postdocs are invited to attend to help show the excellence and hospitality of Emory.

Throughout the symposium, attendees and Emory participants are encouraged to use the Twitter hashtag #STEMory to share their experiences at the event.
