Acclaim: Honors for Fink, Hinman, Margariti and Martin

Aaron Fink was recognized by the Association of VA Surgeons (AVAS) for his distinguished years of service to the nation's veterans during its 39th Annual Symposia.

Fink is professor of surgery emeritus. He also held several positions at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center, including chief of the surgical service and service line manager of the VA's surgical and perioperative care program.

One of Fink's primary achievements was leading the study that examined the feasibility of implementing the VA's National Veterans Affairs Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) in private sector hospitals, which led to the adoption of NSQIP by the American College of Surgeons. Another was being co-principal investigator of the surgical informed consent process study, known as the "Repeat-Back Trial," which provided affirmation for a method for avoiding patient-caregiver misunderstandings, promoting efficiency and avoiding hospital readmissions.

Johanna Hinman is new president of the Georgia Public Health Association (GPHA).

Hinman is associate director of education for the Emory Department of Surgery. She manages the Office of Surgical Education, which encompasses the general surgery residency, medical student programs, other educational courses offered by Department of Surgery faculty, and the Carlos and Davis Center for Surgical Anatomy and Technique.

GPHA represents the largest group of public health professionals in the Southeast and is an affiliate of the American Public Health Association.

Roxani Margariti has been named a Berlin Prize Fellow for Spring 2016 by the American Academy in Berlin.

Margariti is associate professor of Middle Eastern Studies and director of undergraduate studies in the Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies of the Emory College of Arts and Sciences. She will examine the history of the Dahlak archipelago in the southern Red Sea.

The primary goal of the American Academy and its fellowships is to foster greater understanding and dialogue between the people of the United States and the people of Germany.

The Academy offers residential fellowships to scholars, writers, policymakers and artists, enabling them to pursue their work in a manner that encourages participation in the life of Berlin and Germany.

Anthony Martin has been approved as a Fellow in the Geological Society of America.

Martin is professor of practice in the Department of Environmental Sciences. GSA Fellows are elected in recognition of distinguished contributions to the geosciences.

Martin was nominated by GSA Fellow Dan Deocampo, chair of the department of Geosciences at Georgia State University. He praised Martin as "an internationally recognized leader in undergraduate geoscience education and public outreach, in addition to having made outstanding contributions in the field of marginal marine and dinosaur ichnology."
