In celebration of National Nurses Week, Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital introduces Tammy Ortiz.
How long have you worked at Emory Saint Joseph's?
Since June 1996.
What units have you worked in?
I started in Medical Cardiology, moved to Interventional Cardiology after a few years and then served as the manager of that unit. After the birth of my first child 11 years ago, I moved to CCU where I work as the Unit Nurse Educator.
Why did you choose a career in nursing?
I grew up next to an Adventist hospital back home in Puerto Rico and was always surrounded by amazing role models in the health care profession. Pursuing a career to follow in their footsteps just felt natural.
Why do you love nursing, and why is it important to youpersonally?
I love helping others and it is so rewarding to see someone "walk" out of the hospital and know you contributed to their recovery and made a difference in their life.
Have you received any awards?
I have been honored with the Mother McAuley Award in April of 2010 and the Patrick J. McGahan Award for Nurses as Teachers in 2011.
