In celebration of National Nurses Week, Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital introduces Donnis Hoekstra.

How long have you worked at Emory Saint Joseph's?

34 years.

What units have you worked in?

IV Therapy, and as nurse manager for IV Therapy, 6 East and Wound Care. My current role is nurse scholar of IV Therapy.

Why did you choose a career in nursing?

I always wanted to be a nurse, even as a small child. My paternal grandmother was very ill when I was three years old. I would go sit by her bed, comb her hair, wash her face and sing to her. Looking back, I don’t know how much comfort I brought, but she never tried to send me away.

Why do you love nursing, and why is it important to youpersonally?

I love helping people. I feel that this is my mission, to serve God and others.

Have you received any awards?

McAuley Award, CRNI of the Year, Weinberg Scholar.
