Estate planning workshop will help protect your family

Understand how to protect your family financially with a workshop on Wednesday, April 22, at noon in Room 252 of the Rita Anne Rollins Building at the Candler School of Theology.

“Estate Planning with Trusts” is part of the Emory WorkLife Resource Center’s workshop series, Finance Matters, specifically designed to educate Emory employees on topics related to personal finances through money management principles.

In this workshop on estate planning, participants will learn about the importance of wills, powers of attorney and medical directives and whether or not probate will be an issue.

For example, participants will learn that if they do not have a will, the government will write one for them and the government will fill in the blanks in wills that don’t meet standards.

“Planning and preparing for the ultimate transfer of property and designating your personal representatives in charge of your assets are essential steps to achieving peace of mind and gaining financial freedom,” says Aaronnette Jackson, WorkLife associate.

Bernard Kearse, an Atlanta lawyer whose firm specializes in wills, trusts and estates, will lead the workshop.

“We have partnered with the [nonprofit] Society for Financial Awareness organization to conduct this workshop with Bernard for the past two years,” Jackson says. “In the past, we have had a great turnout and he is great with providing the basic information needed when discussing the importance of wills, powers of attorney, medical directives and whether you should worry about probate.”
