Emory athletes named to Capital One Academic All-District Team

Five Emory athletes, four players on Emory's No. 16-ranked softball squad and one on the baseball team, have earned berths on the Capital One Academic All-District Team, an honor awarded annually to students who have excelled both academically and athletically.

For the second straight year, Megan Light (Atlanta), Amanda Kardys (Union, New Jersey), Claire Bailey (Henrico, Virginia) and Lauren Gorodetsky (Palm City, Florida) are representing the Eagles on the 13-member team for softball.

Senior outfielder Brandon Hannon was selected to the baseball Capital One Academic All-District Team.

The Voting for the Academic All-District Team is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Being selected to the Capital One Academic All-District Team means the Eagles will advance to the national voting for the Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

Light, a 2014 graduate in anthropology/human biology with a 3.96 GPA, was named the University Athletic Association's Most Valuable Player for the third time in her career. She claimed her fourth berth on the All-UAA First Team, just the second player in program history to earn that distinction.  She leads Division III with a school season record of 16 homers and has driven in 61 runs, tying a record for the program.  She ranks third nationally in both RBIs per game (1.49) and slugging percentage (1.008).

Light is the 2014 recipient of the Marion Luther Brittain Award, the highest student honor.

Kardys, a double major in biology and psychology with a 3.84 GPA, has the second-highest seasonal mark in school annals with her win-loss pitching record.  Kardys, named to the All-UAA Second Team, has pitched a conference-leading 167 1/3 innings and has an ERA of 2.64.  She has registered seven shutouts and 14 complete games.

Bailey, a biology major with a 3.94 GPA, was a Capital One Second Team Academic All-American in 2012 and now three-time Academic All-District honoree. Bailey has started all 42 games she has played.  She is hitting a career-high .387 and has knocked in 19 runs. She ranks second on the team and third in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with 43 runs scored. Her .500 on-base percentage is second in the club and fourth among league performers.

Gorodetsky, a double major in psychology and political science with a 3.87 GPA,  is a three-time member on the Academic All-District Team. She has started 39 of 40 games; has a .381 batting average with 37 hits in 97 at-bats; and has stolen a team-high 17 bases. She has scored 32 times, making her fifth on the squad for that.  Gorodetsky is No. 2 on the school's all-time list with 66 stolen bases, one shy of tying for first. She was awarded the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship earlier this year.

Hannon, an economics and mathematics with a 3.46 GPA, has started 38 games this season, batting .383 and leading all NCAA Division III players with 56 runs scored and 35 walks.  He has a career-best seven doubles and 25 RBIs during the year, while stealing a team-high 21 bases on 23 attempts. For his career, Hannon is a .364 hitter, and ranks third in the program's history with 176 runs scored and 117 walks, fourth with a .480 on base percentage and 76 stolen bases, and seventh with 213 hits.  He is a three-time Academic all-UAA honoree.
