Call for volunteers to help with Commencement

The Office of University Events has issued its annual call for volunteers to help prepare for Emory's 167th Commencement on Monday, May 14.

Volunteer opportunities start Wednesday, May 9, with the annual "Chair Rodeo" where volunteers set up about 14,000 chairs on the Quadrangle.

Throughout the weekend before the graduation event, volunteers are needed for a variety of activities and behind-the-scenes preparations for the main event. When the thousands of guests join the graduating students, volunteers help ensure their safety and comfort.

• Volunteer ambassadors answer questions and ensure that everyone is where they should be.

• Ushers assist in the general and special-needs seating areas.

• There are also opportunities to help at the information booth, program table and Coca-Cola distribution.

"Each year, over 250 staff members from every corner of the campus offer to help at one or more of the events," says Michael Kloss, executive director of university events. Kloss invites Emory employees to "take part in Emory's rich history of service to the graduating class and to their families and guests at Commencement."

Training sessions will be offered on Wednesday, May 2 at 3 p.m. and Friday, May 4 at 10 a.m. There is new information to share each year, notes Kloss, so even long-time volunteers are requested to attend a training session.

Register to volunteer or contact the Office of University Events for more information.
