To listen to Dr. Helen Mayberg's own words about depression and the promise deep brain stimulation may offer those with the most severe form of depression, enjoy this Sound Science podcast interview: "A new look at depression."
An Emory patient and her journey with depression will be a featured story on CNN Presents on Sunday, April 15 and Saturday, April 21 at 8 pm. The segment will highlight Edi Guyton’s struggle in finding a treatment, and her courageous decision to participate in a clinical trial involving brain surgery.
The ongoing clinical trial, being led by Helen Mayberg, MD, Emory professor of Psychiatry and Neurology, employs a procedure called Deep Brain Stimulation, which uses electrodes to target a particular area of the brain that serves as a “junction box” for the circuits that control our moods.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Chief Medical Correspondent for CNN and Emory neurosurgeon, hosts the segment.
