Information on TB finding at Emory University

University statement Feb. 22, 2012:

Emory University officials announced today that a recently deceased employee was found to be suffering from active tuberculosis that had not been diagnosed or discovered during his lifetime. The diagnosis was confirmed by the DeKalb County medical examiner’s office on Feb. 17, 2012.

Because the employee was a custodian who worked in many buildings on the University’s Druid Hills campus, the University said it has already begun a process of notifying and testing members of the university community who were known to have had substantial contact with the employee.

An announcement signed by three of the University’s top health officials told the community that there are no medical reasons that would call for general screening of students, faculty and staff.

"At this time, Emory University, with assistance from the Division of Infectious Diseases and local health departments, is working to the best of its ability to determine which students, faculty and staff were potentially in substantial contact with the infected individual," said the letter signed by the director of Occupational Injury Management, the director of the Student Health Services, and the Emory University Hospital epidemiologist.

Members of the university community who want more information or who wish to be tested for whatever reason are being asked to contact Occupational Injury Management, Student Health Services, their local health department, or their personal physician.

For more information see the open letter to the University community.
