Feast of Words celebrates Emory faculty authors and editors

The Emory community toasted faculty on Monday night who authored or edited books published in 2019.

The annual Feast of Words celebrated 98 faculty members who authored or edited a total of 104 books last year. Eight faculty members published multiple titles in 2019.

“This year’s publishing scholars raise questions and give voice to new perspectives on myriad important topics, both historical and contemporary,” Christa Acampora, deputy provost for academic affairs, told attendees before toasting the authors’ success. “The published books we celebrate today are evidence of the amazing talent, dedication and creativity of the Emory University faculty.”

Of the 104 books published by Emory faculty in 2019:

  • Emory College of Arts and Sciences faculty are represented 52 times.
  • School of Medicine faculty are represented 20 times.
  • School of Law and Candler School of Theology faculty are each represented 12 times.
  • Oxford College faculty are represented 3 times.
  • Rollins School of Public Health, the Office of the Provost and the university’s libraries are each represented twice.
  • Goizueta Business School and Laney Graduate School are each represented once.

The list included 55 single-author books and 24 multi-author books. Emeriti faculty are on the list 14 times.

Seven titles were brought into publication with help from the Scholarly Writing and Publishing Fund through the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence, which provides small grants to faculty to hire an editor to help take a manuscript from one stage to the next. Those books are:

  • Ken Carter’s “Buzz!: Inside the Minds of Thrill-Seekers, Daredevils, and Adrenaline Junkies”
  • Astrid Eckert’s “West Germany and the Iron Curtain: Environment, Economy, and Culture in the Borderlands”

“It is a complete pleasure for the CFDE, the Emory Libraries and the Emory Barnes & Noble to celebrate the sweeping intellectual breadth of our faculty accomplishment in the form of books,” says Allison Adams, associate director for scholarly writing and research for CFDE.
