ATLANTA – Following an extensive nationwide search, Matt Wain has been named chief executive officer for Emory University Hospital, Emory University Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital and Emory University Hospital at Wesley Woods. He will begin his new role on August 19, 2019.
Wain joins Emory Healthcare from Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Health in Charleston, where he currently serves as chief operating officer. In this role, he provided leadership for the development of high quality, cost-effective and integrated clinical programs including operational oversight of the four Medical University of South Carolina hospitals and related ambulatory clinics in Charleston. He also oversaw over $1 billion in MUSC Health major capital projects including; Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital & Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion, the Summey Medical Pavilion and the East and West Campus expansions. He is an adjunct faculty member at MUSC, College of Health Professions.
Prior to joining MUSC, Wain worked at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania from 2001 to 2013. His tenure included several roles of increasing responsibility culminating as medical center chief administrative officer.
Wain began his professional career as an active duty military officer and Blackhawk helicopter pilot. He retired from the reserve component of military service in 2008. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and earned a Master of Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Worldwide) in Daytona Beach, Florida.

In September 2018, Gartland was promoted to Emory Healthcare Hospital Group President from the position of CEO of Emory University Hospital, Emory University Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital and Emory University Hospital at Wesley Woods. Gartland has been instrumental in leading the nationwide search for his successor.
