Emory Arts kicks off the year with superheroes, storytelling and Shakespeare

The new semester brings a full schedule of arts events to campus. September's highlights range from superhero films to a musical reimagining of Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors."

Emory’s Film and Media Studies Department begins its fall Cinematheque series “Drawn to Film: From Comics to Cinema,” on Wednesday, Aug. 31. The series features films based on popular comics from 1954 to the present day and kicks off with Tim Burton’s "Batman.” The series continues with "Barbarella,” "Flash Gordon," "Popeye," and more. All screenings are free and open to the public, and will begin at 7:30 p.m. in White Hall 208. No need to bring your own popcorn; the film department will be providing plenty!

The Candler Concert Series opens its 2016-2017 season with violinist Sarah Chang, accompanied by pianist Julio Elizalde on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 8 p.m. in Emerson Concert Hall of the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are available for purchase through the Emory Box Office.

Emory University Organist Timothy Albrecht celebrates the works of Bach in the recital Bach Live! on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 4 p.m. Col Legno Bassoon & Percussion Duo, made up of Amy and Scott Pollard, performs on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m. Both take place in Emerson Concert Hall.

Danté Brown, artistic director of Warehouse Dance, begins his residency with the Emory Dance Department this month. On Friday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m., he participates in a Creativity Conversation about his work and choreographic process, held at the Dance Studio.

Also on Sept. 16, the Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta’s (ECMSA) John and Melinda Cooke Noontime Series returns with a concert by the Vega String Quartet, introducing their new first violin, Elizabeth Fayette. The series of noon concerts is held in Ackerman Hall of the Michael C. Carlos Museum. On Sunday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m., ECSMA presents Beethoven’s Seventh through its series in Emerson Concert Hall.

Artist and activist Theaster Gates presents several events at Emory in September, culminating in his closing presentation "Social Practice and Social Justice" on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. in Emerson Concert Hall.

That same night, as part of Shakespeare at Emory, Theater Emory opens its season with Rodgers & Hart’s “The Boys From Syracuse” at 7:30 p.m. in the Theater Lab of Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. George Abbott’s musical reimagining of Shakespeare’s "The Comedy of Errors" infuses the ancient setting of Greco-Roman Ephesus with the burlesque and vaudeville spirit of 1930s New York City. Performances run Sept. 22 through Oct. 2; tickets and complete performance schedule are available online at arts.emory.edu.

Jeffrey Brooks and Silviu Ciulei perform in Clarinet Meets Guitar: An Evening of Shubert Piazzola, and More on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. in Emerson Concert Hall.

Finally, the Music Department hosts artistic duo Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth Laprelle on Monday, Sept. 26, at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Studio for Music & Storytelling: An Evening with Anna & Elizabeth, a musical performance accompanied by paper cuts, shadow puppets, embroidered fabric and more.
