Laney Graduate School seeks faculty, student nominees for Eleanor Main Awards

The Laney Graduate School seeks nominations for two awards recognizing the importance of mentorship in graduate education. Named for an Emory faculty member and mentor, the Eleanor Main Graduate Faculty Mentor Award and the Eleanor Main Graduate Student Mentor Award are presented annually during commencement.

Nominations for both awards are due by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1. For the graduate student award, the nominee must be in his/her graduation year by May of the year nominated.

Main, who passed away in 2008, joined the Emory faculty in 1969, serving in multiple leadership positions, including chair of the department of political science, director of the division of educational studies, acting dean of Emory College, interim dean of the Laney Graduate School, associate dean of both the College and Laney Graduate School, and associate vice provost for graduate studies.

To nominate a faculty member for the award, a complete nomination must include:

  • a nomination letter with the nominee's full name, address, email address, phone number, graduate program, primary academic appointment, and a detailed description of the nominee's mentoring achievements of his/her academic career;
  • support letters from graduate students which demonstrate the nominee's significant contributions to mentoring;
  • a complete, current CV of the nominee;
  • a list of mentees (name, type of training, dates they were mentored, current position/location).

To nominate a graduate student for the award, a complete nomination must include:

  • a nomination letter with the nominee's full name, address, email address, phone number, graduate program, and a detailed description of the nominee's mentoring achievements over his/her graduate student career;
  • support letters demonstrating the nominee's significant contributions to mentoring from graduate students and others, including students they teach;
  • a complete, current CV of the nominee;
  • a list of mentees (name, type of training, dates they were mentored, current position/location when relevant).
