The grandson of legendary golfer Bobby Jones will speak at Emory University about the psychological skills his grandfather developed that enabled him to excel at the game of golf – and at life.

Bob Jones IV, an Atlanta-area psychologist who specializes in sports psychology and executive coaching, will present "In the Mind of the Master" at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015, in the Jones Room on Level 3 of the Robert W. Woodruff Library at Emory University. The event is open to the public at no charge.

The presentation will examine the people who shaped Bobby Jones – most importantly, his mother and his paternal grandfather (Robert Tyre Jones) – and the psychological skills he developed that enabled him to excel at golf and, later, to cope gracefully with a debilitating illness. The golfer was diagnosed in 1948 with syringomyelia, a painful and degenerative spinal disease that eventually took his life in 1971.

Jones said he wants to present a side of Bobby Jones that is not often found in existing information about the golfer.

"There is a tendency to reduce him to a two-dimensional figure," Jones says. "He's often portrayed as someone for whom things came effortlessly, and I don't believe that was the case."

Jones added he will also reveal the truth behind some of the legendary stories about his grandfather.

The Sept. 17 event is in conjunction with the exhibition "Bobby Jones: The Game of Life," which remains on view through Nov. 30, 2015, in the Schatten Gallery on Level 3 of the library.
